MPNP Recommendations for the Management of Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is characterized by widespread chronic musculoskeletal pain. Most patients with fibromyalgia also experience fatigue, sleep disturbances and cognitive impairment. While the exact aetiology of fibromyalgia is still unknown, current knowledge suggests that a disorder in central pain processing may play a role in its pathogenesis.
The Multidisciplinary Panel on Neuropathic Pain (MPNP) recommends using a multidisciplinary approach combining both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments to manage fibromyalgia, with the goals of relieving pain and improving daily function. An appendix containing summary of both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment options is presented.
