MPNP Recommendations for the Management of Neuropathic Pain due to Spinal Cord Pathologies

Spinal cord pathologies, such as traumatic spinal cord injuries, intramedullary tumours, syringomyelia and multiple sclerosis, can often result in pain. The pain is generally chronic and debilitating, and may last for more than 6 months. It is also associated with poor quality of life, stress, depression and other psychological problems.

This Multidisciplinary Panel on Neuropathic Pain (MPNP) recommendation specifically focuses on neuropathic pain caused by spinal cord lesions. It provides a diagnostic algorithm as well as treatment guidelines to manage the condition. An appendix of evidence-based pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment options is also presented.
