MPNP Recommendations for the Management of Idiopathic Trigeminal Neuralgia

Trigeminal neuralgia is an extremely type of facial pain, which can be easily diagnosed and medically managed in most patients. Although the pathophysiology of the pain is obscure, vascular compression of the trigeminal root may be an important contributing factor. It occurs more frequently in older people and is more likely to affect females than male.

This Multidisciplinary Panel on Neuropathic Pain (MPNP) recommendation discusses the pathophysiology and prevalence of idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia. It also provides diagnosis and treatment guidelines for managing the condition with an appendix on evidence-based pharmacological and non-pharmacological management options.
